Description
Winter Morning in Prague. Lesser Town by Jenny Rainbow.
View to the Lesser town buildings from The New Castle Staircase
The new castle staircase is a picturesque 200 meter long pedestrian route (208 steps), which leads to the western entrance to Prague Castle and allows you to admire the magnificent panoramic views of Prague, its red-tiled roofs.
The staircase arose on the site of an old, abruptly climbing road, a road that was first mentioned in written sources already in 1278. At first it was known as the Steep Road. In the XIV century, this road was called Stairs, and later was renamed the Castle Staircase. In 1829 the name was changed to the New Castle Staircase. It actually acquired a modern appearance already in the middle of the 17th century and was only renovated at the beginning of the 20th century by the architect Yozhe Plechnik. The last reconstruction took place in 1970-1972.
The staircase rises to a height of 37 meters. At the top is a statue of St. Philip Neri.
